The game centers on the misotheistic idea of "vengeance on the Gods". The protagonist is a young soldier named Wylfred who holds a grudge against Lenneth Valkyrie. Lenneth chose Wylfred's father, Thyodor, to become an Einherjar, taking his soul into her possession when Wylfred was a mere ten years old. This situation left Wylfred's family in poverty, and his younger sister soon died of malnutrition. Years pass and the young man's anger grows, until he is offered the Goddess's Feather, shed from Lenneth's wings and found near the corpse of his father, by Hel, the Queen of Niflheim. By becoming a renowned warrior like his father, he believes he can eventually be chosen to become an Einherjar, giving him the means with which to exact his vengeance. Joining him on his quest are his close friend and fellow warrior, Ancel, and Ailyth, a beautiful emissary from Niflheim. All is not well in the world as Wylfred sets out on his quest. Central Midgard is poised to be thrown into turmoil as a succession dispute erupts between the two princes of the Artolia Kingdom, Langrey and Cristoff. With the bordering nations of Villnore and Crell Monferaigne closely monitoring Artolia's internal strife, war may once again break out, giving Wylfred the perfect opportunity in which to complete his mission.
The Book of Prophecy is your main tool in the game. You travel around the world hitting every person, monster, plant, and weapon you see with the book. Once you hit something it gets a page in your book. On this page you can view basic information like health, attack points, and the object's code. An object's code is like its DNA only simpler. Once you have the thing's code you can change it. An example: at one point in the adventure the player comes across a writer who has an illness that makes him very weak. Once you hit him with your book you can see the part of his code that's making him sick. You can then remove that part of the code and attach it to an enemy's code to make every enemy of that type weaker. As soon as the piece of code is removed the writer suddenly has a miraculous recovery. It would also work with a weapon, such as a sword that, when used, poisons any enemy it touches.
Frame Data - At the core of every fighting game is the skeletal framework of mathematics often referred to as frame data. Generally reserved for the super strategic Japanese fighting game books, frame data for the 17 arcade characters has been given a dedicated chapter in the official Street Fighter IV strategy guide.
