Hydrocarbon exploration is regarded as one of the great challenges in industrial mathematics. This application-oriented work reflects the multi-disciplinary character of the production workflow, which ranges from seismic data analysis, through geological model building to numerical simulation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The new methods for seismic data acquisition and evaluation in oil and gas exploration described here are currently being implemented at Schlumberger, one of the largest service providers to the oil industry.
