Dave Mason & Cass Elliot

Ostensibly a Dave Mason solo album, this became one of his finest when he was coupled with Cass Elliot, a stroke of genius. Elliot's involvement is, while not suspect, somewhat limited. Although she provides excellent background vocals, she tends to get a little lost in the harmony stack. Nevertheless, this is a great moment for her too. The album, though, is propelled by Mason's awesome songwriting talents, and tracks such as "On and On," "Walk to the Point," and several others bear this out.
In the world of classical-music recordings, the works of J.S. Bach naturally have overshadowed those of the "other" Bachs - the great composer's sons and ancestors. Yet as this CD demonstrates, there is considerable, beauty, originality and power in those too-neglected works. Charles Medlam, the well established interpreter of Baroque music, and his London Baroque ensemble are joined here by harpsichordist Richard Egarr in a demonstration that J.S.'s son Wilhelm Friedemann was in his own right an exceptional composer with a firm understanding of both his father's Baroque-synthesizing insights into musical structure and the new demands of the emerging Classical period in composition.

Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love -- inspired by his belief in Rastafari -- was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

[quote]This was one of my favorite albums in it's time. I never understood why it was never more popular than it was. I found out that this debut album came out at the same time many established bands released albums, and it fell throught the cracks. I looked for this in cd for about 4 years,and was more than happy to get it again. One of the great 3 man bands in my opinion, it rocks.

This is a 2 - DVD Deluxe Set with over 4 hours of unseen material. This performance took place at the Honolulu International Center Arena in Hawaii in 1973. Since it was beamed by satellite to Asian & other countries, there was a delay to America, which missed much of what Aloha had to offer. It was a global smash and was considered one of the most outstanding concert performances of his career. It has a beautiful booklet, with never-before-seen photos & rare memorabilia, a rehearsal concert, post concert songs session, more.
Spencer Davis - The Singles

The Spencer Davis Group is fondly remembered for their late-1960s singles that featured the deep soul vocals of Steve Winwood, then only a teenager. Singles like "Somebody Help Me," "Keep on Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man" were solid R&B rockers, making The Spencer Davis Group one of the most explosive bands in the so-called British Invasion era. When Winwood left to form Traffic, the group (having lost one of the most distinctive voices in rock history) simply wilted away. This collection has all their hits, but also includes several early Traffic tracks like "Paper Sun," and Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright," making it really more of a Steve Winwood compilation. The final track is a bizarre, bombastic, near-mento song called "Incense," released by a group named the Anglos in 1969, supposedly featuring Winwood. He has denied having any involvement with the song, however, and one wonders why it is presented here. There are separate and more definitive collections available for both the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, and the Anglos cut is, at best, a curio.

This release sees Man rely less on the Hammond and harmonized vocals, and more on hard-driven guitar. Its compositional ambitions are perhaps a bit greater -- it opens with "Prelude" and "The Storm," an extended jam that became ever longer and even more free form over the years as a concert favorite. "It Is as It Must Be" circles around the monster groove of a two-chord guitar vamp, while "Spunk Rock" struts over a jagged floor of overdriven guitar and yelped vocals. If nothing else, both the song and the album can be said to live up to their names.
Allan Holdsworth - None Too Soon
EAC Rip --> FLAC, CUE, LOG | Jazz-Rock | 294 MB Label: Restless | Release: 1996 | Catalog: 72928 | Multi
While electric guitarist Holdsworth retains his signature ultra-legato, speed demon sound, he has added a couple of new wrinkles to this date. He's attempting to play some legitimate jazz standards, a couple of Joe Henderson tunes, and other sidebar items. He's also working with the synthaxe, a synthesizer controller, on three cuts. The most revelatory moments of the date come from the acoustic sounding digital piano of Gordon Beck, a true master whose be-bop chops and inventive solo work cements the legitimate jazz aesthetic into the fiber of this music. Electric bass guitarist Gary Willis (of Tribal Tech) and drummer Kirk Covington work pretty well together, and swing, albeit in a more rock/R&B orientation. Holdsworth has a predilection for stating melodies very briefly before immediately going into a solo. This is most evident during John Coltrane's "Countdown," where he tosses out the theme with nice chords, then rips into his distinctive flowing single 16th and 32nd note lines. Holdsworth is not all flash -- he comps frequently and tastefully, as on the well-played Henderson piece "Isotope," getting out of Beck's path as the pianist digs into an aggressive, melody drenched solo

Schubert: Sonates pour le PianoForte Volume 1
X Lossless Rip --> FLAC, CUE, LOG | 3CD | Classics | Covers + Booklet | 828 MB Label: Arcana | Release: 2001 | Catalog: 034087 | Multi
While this first volume of Paul Badura-Skoda's survey of the complete piano sonatas of Franz Schubert is notable for the use of lovingly restored period pianos, even more compelling are the pianist's affectionate interpretations. Mixing mostly early sonatas with a few middle period works, the Austrian pianist creates appealing programs on all three discs. And using four different period instruments for the eight works, he creates distinctive sound worlds for each. Most often he plays a sprightly Conrad Graf, ca. 1825, but sometimes he uses a warm-toned Donath Schöfftos, ca. 1810, and once he uses a ca. 1815 George Hasska with a sweetly singing middle register, a slightly pingy upper register and, as the closing Allegretto demonstrates, a delightful faux-cymbal and drum extension.
Sigismund Thalberg: Piano Music

Sigismund Thalberg, Liszt's rival, was one of the great pianists of the nineteeth century. Before an 1837 keyboard duel between the two, Liszt penned an essay charging Thalberg's music with "impotence and monotony." Modern tastes have awarded Liszt the palm, but, as pianist Stefan Irmer points out here in his own booklet notes (in German, French, and English), observers at the time would not have been unanimous in that judgment. He includes a hilarious commentary by Heinrich Heine, not naming Liszt but praising Thalberg in terms that unmistakably refer to him: "The frail women are no less fond of [Thalberg], even though he does not appeal to their sympathy with epileptic fits on the piano, even though he does not speculate on the extreme sensitivity of their tender nerves...."

"I have discovered the greatest guitar composer of modern times." So wrote Nicolai Makaroff, a wealthy Russian guitar aficiando, who travelled widely through Europe in search of the best guitars and the finest guitar composers. He was introduced to Johann Kaspar Mertz, whom he claims changed his life. "I felt like a Columbus discovering a new America, for here was the great guitar composer I had long given up hope of finding." What Makaroff found, in Mertz, was a composer able to write in the musical idiom of his day, a guitar voice to compare to Schumann and Schubert. Mertz is the seminal guitar composer of the Romantic Period.
