Stephen Hawking is one of the world's most famous scientists. But ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, has left him almost totally paralyzed and it is progressing. Unable to walk, talk, or write, his only way of communicating is through a computer program that turns a small movement of a finger or the blink of an eye, into words from a vocal synthesizer. But Hawking remains determined to discover a theory of everything, a complete set of rules for the Universe. Where did the Universe come from and where is it going? What is the nature of time?
Will it ever come to an end? This program will explore Hawking's major contributions to the understanding of our Universe - from his revolutionary proof that our Universe originated in a Big Bang; to his ground breaking discovery that Black Holes are not completely black, but rather emit radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear, to his insights on string theory. Will he unlock the secret of creation before his time runs out?

How can you make peace when what you really want is revenge? In the wake of 37 million casualties at the end of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson took his dream of a League of Nations to Paris to seek "peace everlasting," joining over 30 international delegations who descended upon the great city for the most ambitious peace talks in history. Helmed by the Big Four (the United States, France, Great Britain, and Italy), the Paris Peace Conference ultimately and ironically sowed the seeds of resentment that led to World War II. In a remarkable feat of filmmaking, director Paul Cowan expertly blends re-enactments with archival footage to transport us to one of the most important summit meetings of the 20th Century. Inspired by the award-winning bestseller by Margaret MacMillan, Paris 1919 chronicles an extraordinary historical event that dissolved empires, redrew maps, engineered the Treaty of Versailles - and created far-reaching consequences that continue to afflict and trouble our world today.Extras: Margaret MacMillan on the Paris Peace Conference.

With the help of leading battlefield archaeologists, stuntmen, computer-generated graphics and some digging, Neil and Tony go in search of both the real and imagined Battle of Bannockburn.

Alien Earths goes beyond our solar system to discover planets so strange we never could have predicted them before. Science is at long last within grasp of one of its "holy grails" – the location of an alien Earth. In the search for this intergalactic haven, astronomers have been shocked by the wide variety of planets around other nearby stars. Some are types of planets totally unknown before this past decade including monstrous gas giants, massive "water worlds", and hulking "super earths" three to five times more massive than our own planet. Scientists have discovered odd ways planets behave: one world is on a highly elliptical orbit, while some planets may have escaped their parent stars altogether, adrift in the murky lanes of the Milky Way. Some planets are so strange we never would have predicted them before, like the planetary zombies that arise from the supernova graves of dead stars. And the question that haunts each of these strange worlds is "can life exist there?" In many cases the answer is no but, on some worlds, the answer might be different. With the launch of the Kepler mission, astronomers expect to find at last, Earth's twin – an alien Earth.

The city centre is surrounded by parklands and is a blend of historic buildings, wide streets, parklands, cafes and restaurants. Adelaide is easy to get around with rolling hills to the east and beaches to the west. With a population of slightly more than one million, Adelaide is the “20 minute city”. The airport is only seven kilometres from Adelaide city. The Adelaide Hills and major beaches are less than half an hour away by car. That’s what we call liveable!

During his stronghold on Columbia, Pablo Escobar, one of the richest and most violent drug lords in history, imported a host of rare and exotic animals for his private zoo on his famous estate, Hacienda Napoles, including four hippos. Over three decades later, this one-off special reveals another side to the cocaine trafficker, and explores the lasting threat that he and his hippos, now multiplied to over 30, pose for the country. Columbian authorities are battling to contain the hippos which now form the largest population of non-native hippos outside of Africa. If they keep reproducing at the alarming rate they are, experts believe there will be at least one hundred hippos in Columbia by the end of the decade. Thankfully there hasn't been a human tragedy but with reports of a hippo escaping the Hacienda Napoles, now a theme park and zoo, and running wild in the Magdalena river basin, that could be only a matter of time. Drug Kingpin Hippos joins a team of veterinarians as they race to capture, castrate, and relocate the male bull hippo before it reaches the huge expanse of the river, with major cities either side. The film also features rare archival footage and exclusive interviews, including one with Roberto Escobar, Pablo's eldest brother and best friend, providing viewers with a history of Escobar's rise to prominence, his demise as the world's pre-eminent narco-terrorist, and the continued hold he still has on the country, in the shape of hippos.

It's full steam ahead when we first drop in at Jay Leno's Garage. Jay fires up two of his classic steam cars and takes us for a couple of rides. Jay also shows off his 11 ton steam engine built in 1860, back when pigs had to be slaughtered to keep it lubricated. Then, in northern Nevada we fire up a coal burning boiler and get a 100 year old steam locomotive chugging across the rugged landscape. In New Orleans we board an authentic paddlewheel steamboat.

Rich Hall continues his cultural critique of American people and places. California has always been an empty sales pitch. Its first settlements were borne of missionary zeal. It promised a haven from marauders, banditos and mercenaries. Since then it has wiled us with unlimited gold, boundless harvests, silver screen-stardom, dotcom salvation and hi-tech silicon marvels. It has always been a place that promises a good chance of success-if you're youthful or white. And if you're Mexican, it at least promises a decent chance of survival. The California dream has always eclipsed its facts or its history. Most other US states are named after geographical place names or Indian tribes or British royalty - New York, Nebraska, Maryland. California was named for Calafia, a mythical Spanish queen, a kind of Spanish Snow White. At the California History Attraction in Anaheim she is portrayed in a 20-minute film narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. And that's California in a nutshell - a place that instantly forgets its past so it can reinvent it for tourists and dreamers. True reality has never been good enough for Californians. They are always vaguely dissatisfied with themselves, their bodies, their spirituality, their government and their present car. Yet they still believe they shape both American culture and American character. And to a large degree, they have. In his unique and sardonic way, Rich takes the viewer on a skewed but keenly-eyed journey to the place built on a tectonic faultline that still deigns to call itself the Land of Dreams.
